Belt System & Grading Syllabus
Karate Belt System and Grading Structure
At our club, we follow a structured and traditional karate ranking system designed to guide students from beginner to advanced levels. This system is divided into two main categories:
-
Kyū Grades (coloured belts – beginner to intermediate)
-
Dan Grades (black belts – advanced)
Each belt symbolizes a stage of technical development, discipline, and personal growth. Progression is achieved through regular training, grading assessments, and dedication to both physical skill and the values of karate.
Kyū Grades – Beginner to Intermediate Levels
These ranks are represented by coloured belts, progressing from 8th kyū (yellow) through to 1st kyū (brown). Each stage builds upon the last, helping students gradually develop their skills and understanding of karate.
Yellow Belt – 8th Kyū
Students are introduced to the foundations of Karate, including stances, basic strikes, blocks, and dojo etiquette. This belt represents a student's first step on the path.
Orange Belt – 7th Kyū
At this level, students begin refining their basic techniques and movement. Kata (forms) are introduced in more detail, and coordination and timing start to improve.
Green Belt – 6th Kyū
Green belt symbolizes growth. Students build tactical awareness and begin to link techniques smoothly. Sparring and self-defence applications are explored more fully.
Blue Belt – 5th Kyū
Blue belts demonstrate increasing control and confidence. New kata and more advanced techniques are introduced, and students begin applying their knowledge more dynamically.
Purple Belt – 4th Kyū
Students show maturity in both attitude and technique. Movements become more precise, with a strong focus on fluidity, spirit (kiai), and deeper understanding of kata.
Brown Belt – 3rd to 1st Kyū
Brown belts are senior students within the kyū system. These grades require solid technique, consistent effort, and a deep understanding of form and application. Senior brown belts may assist in class instruction and serve as role models for junior students. Training at this level prepares students for the responsibility and expectations of black belt grading.
Dan Grades – Black Belt Levels
Achieving a black belt (1st Dan) is a major milestone—but not the end of the journey. Instead, it marks the transition from student to serious practitioner, and often, teacher. Black belt ranks (known as dan grades) reflect increasing levels of mastery, leadership, and contribution to the art of Karate.
1st Dan (Shodan)
Represents mastery of the fundamentals and readiness for more advanced study. Students at this level often begin teaching or mentoring others, while continuing to develop their own technique and understanding.
2nd to 4th Dan (Nidan to Yondan)
These levels demonstrate growing experience, technical precision, and deeper knowledge of Karate philosophy, bunkai (application), and leadership within the dojo.
5th Dan and Above
Awarded to highly experienced practitioners who have dedicated many years to training, teaching, and contributing to the Karate community. These grades often involve a strong focus on mentoring, technical legacy, and embodying the spirit of Karate-do.
A Lifelong Journey in Karate
Our belt system isn’t just about ranking—it’s about progress, character, and commitment. Each belt level helps students develop not only physical skill, but also confidence, humility, respect, and resilience.
We support students every step of the way—from tying their first yellow belt to achieving their black belt and beyond.
If you’re ready to begin (or continue) your journey in karate, we invite you to join our club and experience the transformative power of martial arts.
